While formal styling and evening-wear gets classier and more sophisticated in the colder seasons, it can also become a bit of a chore. Whether you’re reluctantly having to throw on an old coat over a well-thought-through outfit, or frantically searching for a dress at the last minute, styling for the evening often feels sacrificial.

So, to make formal styling a little easier, I created 3 quick tips:
First of all, keep the coats/jackets simple.
If you have a faux-fur wrap or stole you can throw on a simple coat, you’ve got a winner. With coats and jackets, you could have a statement piece or you could keep it simple with a base coloured structured coat.

Second, play around with trends: peplum, velvet, off-shoulder, wrap dresses, jumpsuits – all winners!

And lastly, secure a few little black dresses (LBDs) as these never go out of style and will forever be in season.

Evening styles I love: any number with exaggerated sleeves; peplum edges; wrap-dresses; velvet finishes; off-shoulders; and a good ol’ figure-hugging simple mid-length to full-legth dress.

Pro tip: Add a slim-fitting ultra-feminine trousers-suit/jump-suit to spice up your evening collection this season.

An absolute evening must-have in your wardrobe to overcome any unforeseeable style hurdle: the LBD (little black dress). I cannot overemphasise why every woman needs a little black dress (a few) in her wardrobe…

For uncertain evenings. For planned dinners.
For blending in. For standing out.
For outfit repeats. For “playing it safe”.
For being risqué.

PS. Don’t be afraid to recycle parts of an outfit. A lot of times, it’s how we accessories our outfit that can make all the difference we need. Wear a statement coat instead of a plain coat. Try a different pair of heels… The secret to a killer evening-look is wearing what flatters in all the right places.

Style Checklist

Faux-fur scarf/wrap/coat
Black, camel or grey jacket/coat
Simple form-fitting dress *base colour*
At least 2 different LBDs
A trend: try peplum, “bardot”, velvet or a wrap-style dress
