Coconut oil is the most nutrient dense part of the coconut.
At room temperature, it becomes solid; a bit like the texture of butter. It holds a tropical smell, which may not be to everyone’s preference but the benefits of this oil are just great.
Cooking with coconut oil is a wonderful way to increase the amount of healthy fats in your diet. BUT, coconut oil is not just for cooking; it can be beneficial as a beauty product too.

** Editor’s note:
Coconut oil is a sealant oil which doesn’t moisturise all skin types (especially those with extremely dry skin). Avoid applying plain coconut oil directly on your face!

Consuming Coconut Oil

Not all oils are healthy. Some contain fats which are not so good for the human body.  You might just pick up oils at the supermarket because you find them cheap, but you don’t realise that they may not be so healthy. If you are looking for an alternative, then look no further. Coconut oil is a stable oil that doesn’t break down easily at high temperatures. It carries many nutritional properties, which makes it so different from other cooking oils. You can use coconut oil in every day dishes that you usually cook in other oils. The sweet smell and taste will add more flavour to your dishes and will be beneficial for your overall health. Say no to those fatty oils that you usually cook your meals with. Start cooking healthily using this tropical oil!

Who doesn’t love a smoothie? That warm summer’s day means devouring in something cold and sweet. Of course, your ingredients don’t always have to be unhealthy. You don’t constantly have to add sugar to everything. Eating clean and healthy can be accomplished in many ways. Try substituting coconut oil with sugar in your smoothies. It’s sweet and nutty taste makes coconut oil a great addition to smoothies. It creates a wonderful, yet delicious creamy texture; filled with richness and healthy fats. Give it a go!

Hot Drinks

It may sound bizarre, but coconut oil can be added to hot drinks as well as be used for cooking or smoothies. Not everyone may like the idea of coconut oil being added to their morning tea or coffee but it actually does taste very delicious. Instead of adding that spoon of sugar or cream in your hot drink, why not opt for a spoon of coconut oil instead? Moreover, you can add this melted oil to green tea or any herbal tea too. It definitely does add a kick to your hot drink; at the same time providing your body with health benefits you would not usually get from adding sugar or other ingredients for a sweeter taste!

Make Up Remover

Sometimes applying a lot of makeup can result in it taking a long time to wash or wipe off. This is where coconut oil comes in with an advantage. Just a teaspoon or less of coconut oil can take off a day’s worth of makeup quicker than any wipe can. Massage a dollop of warmed coconut oil onto the skin and watch as the makeup on your face melts away. After that, rinse your face with warm water so that the coconut oil washes off your skin.

Body Scrub

A lot of people make their own body scrubs nowadays. Some people do not suite certain types of body scrubs or even soap, which may cause irritation or allergic reactions. However, it is always safer and healthier to create your own body scrub. Making a coconut oil body scrub is fairly easy. All you need to do is mix half a cup of sea salt or sugar with an equal amount of melted coconut oil, and then use your hands to rub it over your body. The scrub moisturizes your skin as well as removing dead skin cells. The results are amazing: your skin is left soft and radiant. You can also apply these ingredients to tough skin on your feet and elbows so that they can soften.

Massage Oil

Yes, everyone needs a massage every now and again.
It’d be a great treat to give your body a relaxing massage after a long day at work or to just relax yourself in general – and yes, you guessed it –  you can use coconut oil! As a solid, coconut oil’s creamy texture makes it the perfect oil to slather all over your body. All you need to do is apply one quarter sized amount of oil after a long day or right after you get out of the shower so it can sink into your warm skin. The light tropical smell that lingers on your body straight after it has been applied relaxes and soothes the body. Moreover, you can add other oils mixed in with coconut oil for the massage mix; such as peppermint oil and lavender oil.

Hair Mask

The theory is this: coconut oil can get rid of dandruff if you rub it in your hair at least three times a week.
Of course, like any other oil, coconut oil does make your hair oily, but all in all it is great for the hair. At room temperature coconut oil is solid, but once melted it turns into a liquid. The trick is to melt the coconut oil by running the jar under warm water for a couple of minutes. After shampooing your hair, apply some of the oil to wet strands of your hair and twist your hair into a bun. You can let it sit like that for about five minutes before rinsing your hair. It will give your hair moisture and a shine – something that you may have been looking for. Also, you can massage coconut oil into the scalp before bed, leaving the oil in your hair overnight; rinsing it first thing in the morning. You can try both ways and gain the superb benefits of this oil.

Lip Balm

Cracked lips? Nobody wants such.
If you’ve tried the usual – from Vaseline to Nivea – but not seen any improvement, do not fear. Cracked lips do not stand a chance against coconut oil. This fabulous oil is ultra-hydrating, which means it works wonders on your lips. Just apply coconut oil on your lips whenever you can so you can get those soft and radiant lips you’ve always wanted. You don’t need to carry the huge jar around with you. Just scoop some of this oil into a small container, or if you have one, an empty contact lens holder. That way, you can place it in your purse and use it when you are away from home, if need be.

Cuticle Softener

Say good bye to ragged cuticles.
All you need to do is use your finger and swipe a small amount of coconut oil onto each of your cuticles and allow it to sink in. The coconut oil will strengthen your nails and hydrate the delicate cuticle skin, which in return will make your hands look more youthful. What is more, your hands will glow like never before. If you have sensitive skin and lotions don’t work on you, then it is high time you give coconut oil a try.

Under Eye Cream

As you may know, the skin under your eyes is extremely delicate. You must take care of that skin under your eye and treat it gently. Constant rubbing and irritation can be bad for under eye skin. As the skin under the eye is thin and soft, it can be prone to fine lines, puffiness and even dark circles which nobody really wants do they? Eye creams don’t always work and sometimes they can cause more irritation and nasty experiences if they don’t suite your skin. However, there is an alternative if you want to try something natural that already works wonders for the inside of the body. Coconut oil is a fantastic alternative to eye cream. All you need to do is rub a pinch in between your fingers to warm it up before patting it underneath your eyes. You can try this three to four times a week before going to sleep or even upon waking up. The choice is yours. Make full use of coconut oil for those sensitive areas of your face that you get so worried about.

Stretch Marks

Stretch marks can be caused due to a number of reasons. Be it weight loss, puberty and even pregnancy; stretch marks can appear on your body and decide to stay there permanently, much to your dismay. There are a number of ways to lighten those stretch marks and possibly make them disappear forever; depending on person to person. Changing your diet and eating various foods is one way of getting rid of stretch marks. Using coconut oil is another. All you need to do is gently rub some coconut oil on the places that bare stretch marks, daily. Use coconut oil first thing in the morning after you wake up or massage that coconut oil onto your stretch marks after you come out of the shower. It may take a couple of months before you notice a difference in stretch marks fading away, but I promise you, it will make a huge difference.

Be careful: There are a number of badly processed/illegitimate coconut oil products on the market for cheap purchase, so ask around before you dive in! It’s a great investment!
