Did you know?
Almonds are a fruit related to cherries, peaches and plums.
It is believed that almonds first originated from Western Asia and North Africa and are even native to the Middle East going as far back as ancient Egyptian times. Predominantly, the United States is the largest producer of almonds. Nowadays, one can buy almonds raw or even roasted from local supermarkets or online.
Almonds can be found combined in many foods, from deliciously baked almond cakes to almond milk. They may also be grinded into flour and milk can be made out of them too. In addition, they bring a kick into oats, when combined in a bowl of porridge or even flapjacks.
The question is: who cares?
More importantly, do you know the health benefits almonds carry?
In this article, I shed light on the health benefits of our crunchy friend, the almond.
- Almonds Contain Antioxidants
Antioxidants aid in protecting your body against oxidative stress, which may damage the molecule cells and could be a leading factor to cancer or aging. Almonds contain antioxidants and these antioxidants in almonds are found in the brown layer of the skin. Due to this reason, almonds with their skin removed are not a healthy choice. Instead it is better to eat the almonds with the skin still on them. By doing so, the body gains full health benefits of these nuts which then shield the body from health related illnesses.
- High in Vitamin E
Vitamin E is a name for a particular group that belongs to fat soluble antioxidants, which build cell membranes in the human body. These cell membranes protect against oxidative damage. Almonds are one of many of the world’s best sources of vitamin E. Many studies have found that vitamin E intake, such as almonds lowers the risk of diseases, such as cancer, heart disease and even Alzheimer’s disease.
- Control Blood Sugar
Nuts are a perfect choice of food for those that suffer from diabetes. Almonds contain magnesium; a mineral that many people do not get enough of in today’s day and age. High magnesium intake has wholesome advantages for those that suffer from type 2 diabetes which is a common health issue around the world today. Almonds help decrease the rise in insulin and glucose levels after meals. This often prevents those dangerous moments a diabetic suffers after eating a large meal, where their sugar level rises; sometimes causing severe headaches and drowsiness due to the sugar that was in the meal. The almonds eaten assist in the absorption and processing of the glucose in the body.
- Manage Blood Pressure
High blood pressure which is also known as hypertension is one of the main reasons why people suffer from heart attacks, kidney failure and strokes. Regardless of whether a person is overweight or a healthy weight, a deficiency in magnesium is linked with blood pressure problems. Many studies have found that magnesium intake has lowered the risk of suffering from blood pressure issues. As almonds contain high magnesium, they are a good way to keep the body away from issues related to blood pressure. Just a few almonds a day keeps blood pressure regular.
- Reduce Hunger
Are you always hungry in between meals? Do you crave for something sweet, like a chocolate bar or a slice of cake? Try eating almonds to reduce those hunger pangs. They are the perfect snack option as they are low in carbohydrates, but high in fiber and protein. Many studies have found that eating almonds along with other nuts will increase satiety and enable a person to consume lower calories. So, the next time you are feeling slightly peckish and it is too early after a hearty lunch or dinner to eat something heavy on top, take a handful of almonds to stop that rumbling tummy.
- Aid in Weight Loss
A study that was published in the International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders found that an almond-enriched low calorie diet could help overweight people shed those unwanted pounds, rather than a low calorie diet which was high in carbohydrates. Studies have found that those who eat almonds at least two days a week are more likely to keep their weight under control and remain their ideal weight, rather than those that do not consume almonds. Also, the fiber in almonds plays a huge role in bowel movements, which allows weight loss to begin and continue and aid in the general health of the body by eliminating unwanted toxins.
- Good for Bones
Having healthy bones that are strong is essential for everyone. Eating almonds are a brilliant source for providing the bones with vitamins and minerals. A one ounce serving of almonds contains around 80 milligrams of calcium along with 80 milligrams of magnesium which is great for the bones.
- Strengthen the Immune System
Every individual wants a strong immune system don’t they? The human body has many elements that add to its overall health and these include the alkalinity of the systems. Therefore, almonds are a great source for alkali materials, which benefit the immune system and increase the prevention of diseases and health conditions that can have a negative result on the body.
- Advantageous for the Brain
Almonds contain nutrients which help with the development and health of the human brain. These nuts have been widely connected to a higher level of intelligence in the human body along with being seen as a very important food item for children that are growing. Moreover, almonds contain two of the most vital brain nutrients: L-carnitine and riboflavin. These nutrients increase the activity in the brain. Studies have also shown that almonds as a nut and as oil are good for overall health and the functioning of the human body’s nervous system.
- Used for Anti-Inflammation
The human body cannot create its own fatty acids, which leads to obtaining those fatty acids from dietary sources. Almonds contain two vital fatty acids: linoleic and linolenic acids. These assist in reducing the inflammation around the body which many people tend to suffer from. These fatty acids also help to lower cholesterol and promote healthy skin and hair.
- Beneficial for the Skin
Who would have thought that these tiny nuts would be superb for the skin? Well, it is true. Almond oil massages are highly recommended for newborn babies as the nutrients in these nuts are particularly beneficial. Furthermore, almond milk is also added to soaps and body creams due to the fact that almonds have a well established reputation for improving skin complexion.
- Useful for Pregnancy
Almonds contain folic acid which aids in reducing birth defects in newborn babies. They also stimulate healthy cell growth and tissue formation. Neural tube defects are certain conditions where the neural tube may either be missing in the fetus or underdeveloped. As a result, doctors often prescribe folic acid and supplements to pregnant women to ensure that this tube is developed properly. All in doing so, almonds have enough folic acid to keep the mother and the unborn baby perfectly healthy during the pregnancy.
- Prevention of Constipation
No individual wants to feel constipated. Constipation can be irritating, not to mention painful if it continues over a long period of time. Due to the fact that almonds are rich in fibre, they help to prevent constipation. The trick is to drink a substantial amount of water when consuming almonds to speed up the digestive process and get the full benefits. Just 4 or 5 almonds are enough to keep digestion and bowel movements regular.
(!!) Please note: if you have nut-allergies or suffer from kidney and gallbladder problems, stay away from almonds.
Other than that, almonds are packed with a whole lot of goodness for the human body!
